Impacts of 2020 Beirut Explosion on Port Infrastructure and Nearby Buildings

At 18:08 on August 4, 2020, a large explosion occurred at Hangar 12 in the Port of Beirut. The size was equivalent to that an earthquake with local magnitude (ML) 3.3 according USGS. As one largest nonmilitary explosions ever impact urban region, this event provides unprecedented opportunities document impacts infrastructure. To facilitate data collection, Geotechnical Extreme Events Reconnaissance (GEER) Association coordinated multiagency response directed toward collection perishable engineering interest. Two main categories infrastructure systems were impacted: Beirut and building stock. Within Port, triggered quay wall failure flow slide, strongly impacted grain silo structures close proximity 12. city, historical masonry structures, older reinforced concrete modern high-rise impacted. Through combination in-person inspections street-view surveys, we collected structural performance (including damage load-bearing elements) façades. Performance levels classified procedures applied following earthquakes (for performance) newly proposed façades). We describe spatial distributions these types dependencies source distance location-to-explosion direction. demonstrate physical damages correlated proxy maps produced by Jet Propulsion Laboratory Earth Observatory Singapore based Copernicus Sentinel-1 satellite synthetic aperture radar data, stronger correlation than façade damage.
